A merit-based French educational system?

It seems that the educational system in France is unfortunately starting to look like the US system, by moving away from the merit-based concepts on which it was originally built. According to an article published in the NYT on the elite French schools, “children of blue-collar workers, who made up as much as 20 percent of the student body of the top grandes écoles 30 years ago, make up, at best, 2 percent today. Few are minority students.”
